Cairo is known as the "city of a thousand minarets". You will pass by Al-Fustat, Egypt’s first Muslim capital, the 1,000-year-old walled city, the Cairo Citadel, founded by 12th-century leader Salah-el-Din.
We will visit the following mosques:
The Mosque of Aḥmad ibn el-Ṭulun is a huge and majestic red brick building complex built in 876 by the Turkish governor of Egypt and Syria.
The Mosque of Mohamed Aly, located on top of the Citadel, also called "The Alabaster Mosque". Building started in 1839 and finished in 1856.
Al-Rifa'i Mosque is located beneath the Citadel. It is also the royal mausoleum of Muhammad Ali's family. The building is located opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, which dates from around 1361, and was architecturally conceived as a complement to the older structure.
The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan is a monumental mosque and madrasa located in the historic district of Cairo, Egypt. It was built between 1356 and 1363 during the Bahri Mamluk period, commissioned by Sultan an-Nasir Hasan.
We will round the day off in the most famous zouk in Middle East - the Khan el Khalili. Established 1382-1389 as a center of trade in the Mamluk era and named for one of its several historic caravanserais, the bazaar district has since become one of Cairo's main attractions for tourists and Egyptians alike.
The Imam Hussein Mosque is a mosque and mausoleum of Husayn ibn Ali, originally built in 1154, .located in Khan El-Khalili bazaar, near-by the famous Al Azhar Mosque, in an area known as Al-Hussain.
The Mosque of Al Azhar was originally built in 970 AD, which officially makes it one of the oldest of all the mosques in Cairo, and also the oldest university in the world as well. The mosque is located in El Hussein Square, close to the famous Khan el-Khalili market. (Please note some restriction may apply for visiting Al-Azhar.
